Just How Important is Colon Health?

There is a lot of hype surrounding “colon health” these days. Nearly every health website that I have visited contains information on the colon and how making sure it is in top working order is important.

The local health store has an entire section of supplements and other over-the-counter products that promote “colon health”.

This really peaked my interest…I mean, just how important is colon health anyway? I decided to set out on a personal mission to uncover the answer to this question, as well as to find out more about this miracle “colon” that everyone seems to be talking about and interested in. Here, I will share the many interesting facts that I uncovered.

What is the Colon?

I started with the question: “what is the colon”. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have known for as long as I can remember that the colon is the large intestine. I also know that the large intestine is part of the digestive system in the body.

I just felt, based on all the hype, that the colon was much more than this…and, guess what I found out? It is much more than just another “body part”. This part of our body is roughly around six feet when it comes to length, and plays many important roles in the health of an individual.

Check out these really interesting facts that I discovered:

1. The colon plays the most critical role when it comes to taking the waste through the body and properly eliminating it.

2. There are many different types of bacterium that reside in the colon in order to help it properly move the waste through the body! I found this particularly interesting because so many people look at bacteria in a negative light, but without some degree of bacteria in the body, we would not be very healthy!

3. I learned that the colon will remove the liquids from the materials passing through the digestive tract in order to make them suitable for elimination.

4. I also learned that if something does not go like it should in the colon that all that waste that should be eliminated can build up on the walls of the large intestine and cause many complications – like weight gain, and even sickness!

Common Colon Problems

The next thing that I wanted to research were the “problems” that could occur within the colon. I mean, the last thing that I wanted to do was gain weight or get sick because MY colon was not working properly.

Well, I conducted my research, and it looks like I am in the clear on this one, but if you are reading this, you may like to know what they are. The following details some problems that indicate there is potential risk when it comes to colon health:

• Inflammatory Bowel Diseases such as ulcerative colitis and even Crohn’s disease can indicate severe problems in the large intestines. If you suffer from these diseases, you may experience discomfort, bleeding, and even very severe diarrhea.

• Diverticulitis is another complication associated with the colon. When someone has this, it means that the walls of the colons develop these little sacs or pouches and foods can actually get stuck in these when it is being digested. In addition to this, these little pouch-like things can become swollen and really hurt!

• There are a number of other colon problems that one can experience. These include hemorrhoids, growths, and even anal fissures!

Conclusion

Now that I am a little bit more informed when it comes to the overall functioning and health of the colon, I can honestly say that I completely understand all the hype that surrounds colon health.

The colon is necessary to ensure that all the foods that you consume is properly moved and digested in the body. If this fails to occur, these particles can become lodged on the walls of the colon. If this occurs, you will find that you start to gain weight, and even become sick!

So, yes, in conclusion, colon health is extremely important. If you want to ensure optimal health, it is important to start with the colon!
